Miami Porcelain Veneers Dentist: Dr. Ramon Bana

At Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Ramon Bana uses porcelain veneers (aka teeth covers, a tooth cover) to conceal numerous aesthetic imperfections on his patients’ teeth. He customizes each tooth cover for a specific patient and a particular tooth. Since Dr. Bana wants his patients to be thrilled with their results, he and his team use state-of-the-art equipment to create veneers that seamlessly blend in with the natural teeth. Customization ensures that the veneers fit well, feel comfortable and look natural.

What Imperfections Can Porcelain Veneers in Miami Camouflage?

Dr. Bana can cover a tooth to conceal a variety of aesthetic imperfections.

Teeth covers can hide:

  • Chipped and broken teeth
  • Tooth discoloration and stains that are unable to be addressed with whitening treatments
  • Teeth that look small
  • Spaces or gaps, especially when the gap is between the two front teeth (i.e., diastema)
  • Worn down teeth
  • Uneven spacing between the teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

Do Porcelain Veneers Damage the Teeth?

No, they do not actively damage the teeth. Nonetheless, good oral hygiene is vital to maintaining the health of the teeth and gums, including the teeth with covers.

What Are the Benefits of Having Dental Veneers?

These thin covers can dramatically enhance an individual’s smile, which usually increases his or her confidence level, raising self-esteem.

Who Should Consider Porcelain Veneers in Miami?

People who have any of the aesthetic issues listed above, and would like to enhance their smile, may want to learn more about using these thin teeth covers to improve the look of their teeth. Once Dr. Ramon Bana applies the patient’s teeth covers, he or she will have a beautiful, bright, uniform-looking smile.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Covers?

An individual who is healthy, is dedicated to practicing good oral hygiene, and has an adequate amount of tooth enamel is usually a good candidate for veneers.

Is There Anything That Would Disqualify Someone From Being a Good Candidate for Porcelain Teeth Covers?

Yes. Anyone with an oral health issue (e.g., gum disease, cavities) should address the problem before considering a cosmetic treatment like teeth covers.

What Is the Difference Between Dental Crowns and Veneers?

A porcelain veneer only covers the surface on the front of a tooth. While teeth covers successfully enhance an individual’s smile, they are not necessarily designed to strengthen or repair the teeth.

A dental crown covers the entire structure of the tooth, which can improve its appearance. In addition, the crown protects and adds strength to the part of the tooth that remains. The purpose of a crown is to restore a tooth that sustained damage due to decay or trauma.

If the natural tooth is unsavable, a crown and implant can replace the lost tooth.

How Many Porcelain Veneers Does a Patient Need?

The patient’s dental issues and overall goal helps Dr. Ramon Bana determine how many teeth covers are necessary to help create the smile the patient desires. At the initial consultation, Dr. Bana examines the patient’s teeth and gums. Once his examination is complete, he makes a recommendation for treatment.

What Is a Full Smile Transformation?

A patient interested in a smile transformation will receive 4 to 8 veneers. To fulfill this desire, Dr. Bana typically places teeth covers on the front teeth in the upper arch. He chooses these teeth because they are the most visible when someone talks or smiles.

Is the Process of Placing Porcelain Teeth Covers Painful?

In order to place the teeth covers, Dr. Bana does need to prep the patient’s natural teeth. However, this preparation process involves very little pain, if any. Patients may receive local anesthesia before the tooth preparation process begins.

An Initial Consultation for Porcelain Veneers at Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry

During a comprehensive initial consultation, Dr. Ramon Bana examines the patient’s teeth and gums. He wants to make sure that the patient has healthy gum tissue and that his or her teeth have an adequate amount of enamel to hold the teeth covers.

After the examination, Dr. Bana has the information he needs to determine if the patient is a good candidate for porcelain veneers. If the patient is a better candidate for a different procedure, Dr. Bana discusses these other options with the patient.

A Good Candidate May Be Able To Have Teeth Covers Placed on the Same Day

If the patient is a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure and decides to move forward with treatment, Dr. Bana may apply the tooth coverings on the day of the consultation. However, if the patient needs time to think about having their teeth covered, he or she can call the office to schedule the procedure at a later date.

Dr. Ramon Bana and his staff never pressure their patients into having procedures. At Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry, the patient is always in control.

The Preparation Process To Place Veneers in Miami

After Dr. Bana carefully removes very small amounts of enamel from the front of the teeth, he takes a digital impression. Dr. Bana’s lab experts use this digital impression to create the patient’s custom-designed porcelain veneers.

Creating the Patient’s Customized Teeth Covers

At his state-of-the-art office in Miami, Dr. Bana’s team of dental professionals creates his patients’ unique, personalized teeth covers using the innovative CEREC® technology (i.e., Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic).

The Benefits of Using CEREC Technology

Using CEREC’s revolutionary technology, Dr. Bana can complete preparing the teeth, the lab can create the covers on-site, and then Dr. Bana can apply the patient’s covers during a single office visit. Therefore, CEREC technology eliminates the need for patients to wait several weeks for their teeth covers to be created elsewhere and then delivered to the office. Furthermore, there is no need for patients to wear temporary covers as they wait for their permanent porcelain veneers to arrive.

The Procedure for Applying Porcelain Veneers at Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry

Once the patient’s custom-designed teeth covers are ready, Dr. Bana examines them to ensure they are the correct shape and size. He also checks to see that the color matches the shade the patient desires. In addition, before applying the teeth covers, Dr. Ramon Bana makes sure that each one is a perfect fit for its corresponding tooth. Following this physical examination, Dr. Bana uses dental cement to permanently bond the patient’s teeth covers to his or her previously prepared natural teeth.

After securing all the teeth covers, Dr. Bana checks the patient’s bite and, if necessary, makes adjustments. Once the adjustments are complete, the patient’s veneers will look and feel just like his or her natural teeth. The last step of the procedure is cleaning and polishing the tooth coverings.

Patients See Their Results Immediately

Directly following application, patients see a dramatic improvement in their smile. Although the results are immediate, Dr. Bana makes sure that the tooth coverings he places successfully camouflage the imperfections of the teeth and that the results look completely natural.

Patients Return To Their Normal Activities the Same Day

Following veneer placement, there is no downtime, so patients can return to their normal activities directly following their porcelain teeth covering procedure. However, patients who receive local anesthesia should refrain from eating and drinking until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.

Are There Any Side Effects Following Placement?

Patients may experience some sensitivity or slight discomfort for a few days after their tooth-covering procedure. If necessary, patients can use over-the-counter medication to relieve any discomfort they experience.

Patients Return To Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry for a Follow-up Appointment

A follow-up appointment is scheduled. Dr. Bana wants to make sure that the patient is happy with his or her new smile.

Porcelain Veneer Care – What Patients Need To Know

Just like natural teeth, porcelain teeth covers require routine brushing and flossing. In addition, patients should continue having dental cleanings at least twice a year.

How to maintain porcelain veneers:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoid brushing and flossing aggressively.
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Do not use whitening products, as these could scratch the porcelain.
  • Use a mouthwash that is specifically designed for use with veneers.

How To Prevent Veneer Staining

Although porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, eating and drinking foods and beverages that are dark or brightly colored can eventually lead to staining.

Dr. Bana recommends that his patients avoid, rarely consume, or rinse their mouths directly following the consumption of:

  • Red wine.
  • Black coffee.
  • Tea.
  • Blueberries.
  • Raspberries.
  • Cranberries.
  • Seedless jam.
  • Tomato sauce.
  • Soy sauce.
  • Curry.
  • Beets.
  • Licorice.

Tips for preventing porcelain veneer staining:

  • Add milk or cream to coffee and tea.
  • Use a straw when drinking brightly colored beverages, including red wine. The straw allows the beverage to bypass the teeth, thus limiting the veneers’ exposure to the coloring.
  • Remove stains from the tongue with a tongue cleaner.
  • Tobacco use of any kind promotes staining. Therefore, patients should stop using these products (e.g., cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco).
  • Maintain the teeth, covers and gums by practicing proper oral hygiene.

How To Extend the Life of Porcelain Veneers in Miami

Generally, porcelain teeth covers have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. However, without proper care and maintenance, that lifespan can decrease dramatically. Knowing how to prevent damage can increase the lifespan of a patient’s porcelain teeth covers.

Patients should never open packages or tear off tags using their teeth.

Patients who unconsciously grind and clench their teeth while sleeping (i.e., sleep bruxism) need to wear a custom-made nightguard to protect their veneers. If a patient has awake bruxism, he or she needs to avoid clenching and grinding his or her teeth as well.

When participating in physically demanding activities that could lead to a mouth injury, patients must protect their porcelain teeth covers by wearing a mouthguard during these activities.

Never bite directly into foods that are hard or crunchy (e.g., carrots, apples). Instead, cut these foods up and then chew them with the molars in the back of the mouth.

Do not chew on ice, hard candy or any other food that can potentially damage veneers.

Are There Any Disadvantages Associated With Teeth Covers?

As with any cosmetic treatment, patients need to consider the potential disadvantages of having an elective procedure.

Before having their porcelain tooth covering procedure, patients need to consider that:

  • Once teeth covers are applied, they may not be able to have the results reversed.
  • They will lose some natural enamel on the front of the teeth receiving the covers. However, dental cement and veneers do cover these areas, providing protection.
  • At some point, a covering may become loose or fall off.
  • Their teeth may be more sensitive to temperature variations.
  • Since porcelain teeth covers are cosmetic, insurance does not usually cover this treatment.

How Much Do Porcelain Veneers Cost in Miami?

Costs vary depending on the experience and qualifications of the cosmetic dentist, the number of teeth covers a patient needs and the complexity of his or her case.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Porcelain Veneers?

Since a tooth-covering treatment usually relates to correcting imperfections for cosmetic reasons, the majority of insurance companies will not pay anything towards porcelain veneers or their application. That said, if an individual’s treatment is considered medically necessary, the insurance might cover a portion of the treatment. Therefore, Dr. Ramon Bana recommends that his patients find out if their insurance company would cover this type of treatment.

What Could Make Teeth Covers a Medical Necessity?

Teeth covers may be medically necessary if the patient needs them to correct issues related to an accident (e.g., a broken tooth). When this is the case, the insurance may recognize this tooth-covering treatment as restorative procedure instead of cosmetic.
