Smile Makeover Treatments at Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry
Teeth Whitening in Miami, With Zoom
As a cosmetic dentist in Miami, Dr. Ramon Bana whitens his patients’ discolored teeth using Zoom.
Tooth discoloration frequently results from drinking beverages like tea, coffee, colored colas and red wine. In addition, certain medications, brightly colored foods, smoking and even genetics can have an affect on an individual’s tooth color. Today, cosmetic dentists can address this discoloration with in-office whitening treatments like Zoom.
Zoom uses a hydrogen peroxide gel and an Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to whiten the teeth. Zoom’s chairside lamp accelerate the whitening process. As the peroxide gel breaks down, oxygen enters the tooth to address staining and discoloration. The structure of the patient’s tooth remains unchanged.
Dr. Bana uses Zoom’s Advanced Teeth Whitening Process because he can brighten his patients’ teeth substantially during a single office visit.
Porcelain Veneers Can Provide Patients With a Flawless Smile
Veneers are thin shells that Dr. Ramon Bana places over a patient’s existing teeth.
Porcelain veneers can camouflage:
- Discoloration that cannot be addressed with a whitening treatment (e.g., discoloration resulting from tetracycline use).
- Slightly crooked teeth.
- Teeth that are misshapen or malformed.
- Chipped, cracked or broken teeth.
Gum Recession Treatment
Without treatment, gum recession can eventually lead to tooth loss.
There are several factors that make an individual more likely to develop a receding gum line.
These factors include:
- Being over the age of 65.
- Having periodontal disease.
- Smoking or chewing tobacco.
- Brushing too aggressively.
- Having a piercing in the tongue or lip.
- Injuring the gum tissue.
- Building up of plaque and tartar.
- Inheriting thin gum tissue, which increases the likelihood of developing a receding gum line.
In addition, people who previously had braces or some other orthodontic treatment, as well as those who have misaligned teeth, are at an increased risk of developing a receding gum line.
How Dr. Bana Determines if a Patient Has Periodontal Disease
If the patient’s periodontal pockets measure 5 millimeters or above, he or she has periodontal disease. At Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Ramon Bana uses his skill and experience as a general, restorative and cosmetic dentist to recommend the treatment that will provide his patients with optimal results.
The treatment that Dr. Bana recommends depends on why the patient’s gum line is receding. If the recession is mild, he may consider nonsurgical options, such as topical antibiotics, cleaning beneath the gum line with scaling and root planing, orthodontics to address crooked teeth or dental bonding to cover exposed nerve roots. Patients who neglect to seek treatment early usually need to have their gingival tissue (i.e., gum tissue) restored with gum recession surgery (aka gum graft surgery).
During gum recession surgery, Dr. Bana uses a gum graft to replace missing gingival tissue. Dr. Ramon Bana may take this graft from the roof of the patient’s mouth, or the patient may opt for sterilized human donor tissue.
Once Dr. Ramon Bana has the grafts properly positioned, he stitches them into place.
Gum Contouring Surgery (aka Gingival Contouring Surgery)
With a gum contouring procedure, Dr. Bana smooths out an uneven gum line. This procedure is particularly helpful for patients with long teeth or a receding gum line.
The results Dr. Ramon Bana achieves with gum contouring are permanent. Although gingival contouring is primarily considered a cosmetic procedure, it also reduces the patient’s risk of developing periodontal disease.
At Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry, when Dr. Bana performs procedures requiring the removal of gum tissue, he uses a low-level laser. By using a laser, Dr. Ramon Bana eliminates the need for cutting and stitching of the gum tissue. Furthermore, the patient’s gums will not bleed.
Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening can help prevent the need for an extraction.
Crown lengthening provides the patient with enough tooth above the gum line for Dr. Bana to place a crown. By lengthening the tooth before he places the patient’s crown, Dr. Ramon Bana ensures that the new crown will not damage the patient’s gum tissue or jawbone.
Dr. Bana also uses the crown lengthening procedure to address a gummy smile.
A person who has a gummy smile has teeth that appear too short. During a crown-lengthening procedure, Dr. Bana uses a low-level laser to remove excess gingival tissue. By removing this excess tissue, he exposes more of the patient’s teeth, which makes the teeth appear longer.
Tooth-colored, BPA-free Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings may also be referred to as white fillings, mercury-free fillings or composite fillings. These fillings do not contaiin metal. Instead of metal, they consist of porcelain or composite resin. Tooth-colored fillings address the same issues (i.e., repairing and preventing tooth damage) as their traditional counterpart, but without the concerns associated with metal fillings.
Cosmetic Bonding
Dr. Bana uses dental bonding to make slight adjustments to his patients’ smiles. In addition, composite bonding can camouflage imperfections. Dr. Ramon Bana uses bonding to address chips and fill in gaps.
Before he bonds the patient’s teeth, Dr. Bana customizes the composite bonding so that it matches the color of the patient’s tooth.
Inlays and Onlays
Cosmetic dentists use inlays and onlays to restore teeth. An inlay covers the surfaces between a tooth’s cusps. An onlay covers the surfaces between the cusps and at least one of the cusps. If the onlay covers the entire surface of a tooth and all its cusps, the restoration is essentially a crown.
Pre-prosthetic Surgery
Sometimes patients need to have surgery prior to their restorative procedure. During the pre-prosthetic surgery, Dr. Bana prepares the patient’s mouth for the prosthetic dental appliance. By preparing the mouth ahead of time, the form and function of the patient’s appliance are enhanced.
Potential issues Dr. Bana may address during pre-prosthetic surgery:
- Excess bone
- Unnecessary or extremely damaged teeth
- A receding gum line
- An inadequate amount of jawbone
Root Canals
An injured, fractured, cracked or decaying tooth can lead to an infection in the pulp of the affected tooth.
During a root canal, Dr. Ramon Bana removes the tooth’s infected pulp and nerve. He cleans and shapes the empty tooth canal. After he sterilizes the canal, Dr. Bana fills it in.
If the visible part of the natural tooth can be saved, Dr. Bana seals it with a tooth-colored filling. If necessary, he can replace the damaged tooth with a crown.
Same-day Crowns With CEREC®
Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) is a device that allows cosmetic dentists to create some of their patients’ customized dental appliances on-site.
As a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Ramon Bana uses dental crowns as a means to restore a natural tooth and correct aesthetic issues.
A patient who has tooth fractures, discoloration that cannot be addressed with a whitening treatment or gaps between the teeth may benefit from a dental crown.
Traditionally, dental crown creation took several weeks and the patient needed to return to the office at least twice to have the dentist apply his or her custom-designed dental crown. However, CEREC has made dental restoration procedures quicker and more convenient than ever before.
How CEREC Works
On-site creation is possible because of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing). This revolutionary process allows the cosmetic dentist to create an impression of the patient’s teeth using computer software. Once the impression is created, it is transferred to the milling or grinding unit. This unit fabricates the patient’s ceramic restoration.
Here are some of the dental restoration appliances cosmetic dentists can fabricate with CEREC:
- Dental crowns
- Veneers
- Fixed bridges
- Dentures
- Inlays
- Onlays
Dental Bridges
When teeth are missing, chewing and speaking may be affected. Even the absence of one tooth can alter these functions. A cosmetic dentist can correct this problem with a dental bridge.
A bridge can replace one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. It can be fixed or removable. A fixed bridge must be removed by the dentist, whereas, a removable bridge is taken out by the patient regularly for cleaning purposes. Dr. Ramon Bana will recommend the bridge that he feels will serve the patient best.
Full Dentures and Partial Dentures
Dentures and partial dentures are customized dental appliances. Both of these appliances replace multiple missing teeth and can be removable or supported by implants. Dentures and partials restore the patient’s smile and the functionality of his or her mouth.
A patient receives a partial when multiple teeth are missing on the same arch, but some of his or her authentic teeth remain.
If all the patient’s natural teeth on the upper or lower arch are missing, a full denture can replace these missing teeth.
If all of a patient’s teeth are missing on the upper and lower arches, Dr. Ramon Bana designs a custom-tailored denture for each arch.
Dental Implants
Whether an individual is missing one tooth or multiple teeth, dental implants may a good option. With permanent dental implants, glue and denture cleaner are no longer required. These implants are functional, and they look and feel just like natural teeth.
A single tooth implant holds a prosthetic tooth (i.e., a dental crown).
If numerous teeth are missing on the same arch, several dental implants hold a custom-made, multi-tooth appliance.
Implant-supported Dentures and Partials
Implant-supported partials and dentures can be permanent or removable.
Traditional dentures and partials serve their purpose, improving the function and aesthetics of the mouth. However, as time passes, the body begins to reabsorb the jawbone. This happens because the roots of the missing teeth are no longer stimulating it. This loss of jawbone negatively affects the appearance of the face. For example, the cheeks sink in, which can make an individual appear older than he or she actually is. Implants prevent these facial changes because they continue to stimulate the jawbone, which means that the bone remains intact.
As the jawbone atrophies, the fit of the patient’s denture or partial loosens. Unless the patient has the denture or partial relined, or a new appliance created, it is at this point that people begin to use glue to keep their dentures and partials steadier. With an implant-supported denture or partial, the patient has a stable appliance that will never need glue to remain in place. Implants also look and feel completely natural.
All-on-4®
Advancements in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible to replace an entire arch of missing teeth with a prosthetic appliance. Furthermore, on the day of their dental implant procedure, patients leave Miami Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry with a temporary set of teeth.
As long as the patient has a sufficient amount of jawbone, dental implants can be placed without the need for a procedure to build up the jawbone (i.e., bone grafting).
After Dr. Bana places the implants, he adds special abutments. These abutments hold the patient’s temporary replacement teeth in place. Once the dental implants bond with the patient’s jawbone (which takes approximately 6 months) the patient returns to receive his or her permanent replacement teeth.
The Hybridge® Solution
Unlike removable dentures and partials, the Hybridge solution consists of permanent, durable, natural-looking teeth. Much like the All-on-4 dental implant procedure, Dr. Ramon Bana uses the Hybridge solution to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or to fully reconstruct a patient’s mouth.
The difference between the All-on-4 and the Hybridge solution is the amount of time required to complete the restoration. In addition, the Hybridge solution can replace missing teeth utilizing the patient’s existing jawbone, which means even if the body has reabsorbed some of the jawbone, a graft is not necessary.
The entire Hybridge solution process takes from 3 to 12 weeks. The timeframe depends on how extensive the restoration is.
Teeth-In-A-Day
This technique is designed for those who need multiple teeth replaced, including an entire upper or lower arch of teeth. This procedure allows a cosmetic dentist to provide a patient with his or her replacement teeth in a single session. Typically, during the Teeth-In-A-Day procedure, Dr. Bana places 4 to 6 implants into the jawbone, these implants can hold an entire arch of teeth.
Teeth Tomorrow®
The Teeth Tomorrow tooth-loss solution is designed to replace a full arch of missing teeth. Dr. Bana places titanium metal posts into the upper or lower jawbone. The prosthesis that is used is created using Prettau® Zirconia, which is a material that does not chip, discolor or decay, but looks and feels just like natural teeth.
Implant Replacement
Should an issue arise with the implant itself, the replacement teeth or dental crown that the implant holds, Dr. Ramon Bana can address these issues.
Invisalign®
Invisalign is a revolutionary teeth-straightening solution that involves the use of clear, removable aligners to straighten the teeth. These aligners are switched out with another custom-designed aligner every week or two throughout the treatment process. Patients remove their aligners while they eat and drink, as well while brushing and flossing.
Teen Invisalign®
The Teen Invisalign aligners have small blue dots on them. These dots are hidden within the aligner and gradually fade with wear. Dr. Bana monitors these dots to ensure the patient is wearing the aligners as directed.
